Whether you are in the medical, electrical, janitorial or any other field, service providers all have at least one thing in common: they obtain the majority of their payments through the use of invoices. Although invoices are a useful and effective way to obtain payments, they do have a few shortcomings. One of the major shortcomings is that they can cause a major shortage in the amount of actual money that you can use. As a service provider, when you issue an invoice to one of your customers, chances are that you give them anywhere from one to three months to pay that invoice. In an ideal world, your customer would pay the invoice as soon as you issued to them, instead of waiting until the very end of the period that you have specified. Unfortunately, things do not work that way in the real world. For most service providers, the majority of their customers do wait as long as possible to pay their invoices. Even though the amount of time can be reduced, this normally leads to a loss of customers.
Fortunately, there is a way to receive your payments as soon as you issue invoices. While traditional forms of financing (such as loans) do not take view accounts receivable (invoices) as a viable asset, companies that offer a service known as factoring realize that accounts receivable are a very viable asset. Because of this, they will purchase your invoices for seventy to ninety-five percent of their face value, and you will receive your payment within approximately one day of issuing your invoice. After your customer pays their invoice, you will receive the remaining balance of that invoice (minus a small service fee by the factor). Regardless of how small or big your customer base is, factoring is a practice that you can benefit from. Most service providers that use factoring are even able to cover the small service fee charged by the factor because they can greatly expand their business as a result of their increased cash flow!
